Santa's Motor Gift Bag And The Radio-Nosed Reindeer

Happy Holidays everyone, I wish you a wonderful Christmas time and good luck for 2011!

Btw, The Daily Cartoonist put my DUCK book on the "End of the year must have cartooning products" list! Smashing, that was really a surprise! So, if you're interested in getting a copy get one while you can, the book is nearly sold out.

"A superb book filled with some of the best character and vehicle design around the wit involved is fabulous."
Amazon UK
"Our dear friend Florian has released a book and it looks awesome just as about everything that he pencils."
Mark Langeneck, Kaliber10000

Another Process Film Clip: Rough Construction

Well, the character design of this bear here is indeed not that inventive, but it shows nicely how I get startet when I begin a new digital sketch.

P.S.: Don't miss Hans Bacher's latest post, which is, as he writes, the first of a series of posts on legendary Disney artists. And, btw, Paris based artist and fellow The Art Center team-mate Xavier "XAV" Ramonède posted a beautiful step-by-step run of his latest illustration. Check it out right over here! So, last but not least, it's always a delight to stop by Studio Soi's Newsblog and Hat's smashingly beautiful artbox of tricks!

Rough Design In Progress

I screen-recorded this design's inital drawing part and put it on Vimeo. This sketch btw was more or less the preliminary draft to the "huge" bird character in the previous posting here (paper plane kit). Anyway, here you are:

Small Update Inbetween

Today, I stumbled upon Mike Nguyen's beautiful live rough animation demo he did at Denmark-based Animation Workshop Academy (which BTW Willie Real and I are going to visit next month, for giving a class on character design):

BTW, you always can rely on the Academy of Art Character and Creature Design Notes Blog for smashing updates, infos and inspiration, it's one of my favorite spots on the internet when it comes to character design etc.:

WEnd

I have to shift the toy release to the weekend or a little later. 'Had and still have way too much regular work to finish here, so, see you then...

BTW, quite a winter we have, I must say.

Toy

Update: I've to postpone the release to Friday evening or so due to that today's lunch break was too short to get everything done. So, the new motto is "Friday is toyday", or so I say:

----

"Thursday is toyday"
Come back on Thursday (December 2nd, 2010), 18:00pm CET (Central European Time), and you will get a toy to take home with you! Here on this blog!

Semi-Rough Sketch

This, then, is a nice example for a semi-rough sketch, it's much more definite than the samples I posted the other day.

Update: Here's a little winter colour inspiration. I took those shots in my hometown's city park, today in the early morning.

BTW, I'm in the – literally – lucky position to be buddy-buddy with 'Lucky Luke' artist Achdé, so, guess what I got in my mailbox, last week?:

Very, Very Rough Pre-Sketches

This is the roughness I usually start with. BTW, Uli is back blogging! And how! Check out this hand-drawn animation test gem:

Wings For Roger Windsock (Gene Deitch)

A little inspiration from the past. The design of "Wings for Roger Windsock" is BTW outstanding!

Here's another classic, one of my personal educational film favourites BTW. John Sutherland's "A Is For Atom":
